Now, the story about another Great Dane, a service dog named George, is going viral. You see, George helps a little 11 year-old girl, named Bella, born with Morquio Syndrome, by replacing her crutches.
George was trained by the Service Dog Project and donated to Bella.
According to their website, the Service Dog Project provides a better quality of life for the mobility impaired. The organization located in Ipswich, Massachusetts has donated over 100 Great Danes as service dogs to individuals who have severe balance and mobility limitations.
“These dogs provide a valuable service and have enhanced the quality of life for their owners,” they state.
Before George, who weighs 131 pounds, Bella couldn’t walk on her own. She relied on crutches or a wheelchair. George helps Bella get from class to class on her own.
“When I had crutches, I couldn’t walk at all. But now I can. Oh, he helps me walk. I lean on him like a crutch,” Bella told the ABC news reporter.
Service Dog Project said that their dogs have been placed with children, war veterans, and others who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, Friedreich’s Ataxia and more.
While each dog received extensive training for balance, once a dog is paired with an applicant, the organization says the dog is uniquely trained to suit their needs.
